Monetizing live video with real-time analytics at broadcast scale
Platform for broadcasters and media companies to deliver monetized video — capturing, standardizing, synchronizing, and routing data to client endpoints at scale devops automation.
Broadcast technology company partnered with Spectrum to address operational and technology gaps in media & broadcast. Legacy ingestion could not keep pace with live event volume. Client integrations required custom exports per broadcaster. Spectrum applied a phased delivery model — 10 months — aligning stakeholders, compliance needs, and production cadence. Since 2016, Spectrum has delivered similar programs with managed teams and fixed-cost options.
Business challenge
Legacy ingestion could not keep pace with live event volume. Client integrations required custom exports per broadcaster.
Ingest limits
Legacy pipelines dropped frames during peak live events.
Custom exports
Each broadcaster required bespoke integrations.
Release risk
Monolith deployments were too slow for revenue features.
SLO pressure
Live sports and news demanded sub-second routing visibility.
Solution
Broadcasters pay for seconds of reliability during live events — dropped frames are revenue lost. We replaced bespoke exports with APIs and put ingest on streaming infrastructure that scales when audiences spike.
Module 1: Event streaming
Live capture feeds Kafka topics partitioned by event and venue; normalization services strip vendor-specific quirks before fan-out to subscribers. Backpressure handling was load-tested against last season’s peak finals — the engineering team watched lag metrics, not CPU alone. Replays and live share the same schema so client apps do not fork logic.
Module 2: API product layer
Each broadcaster used to get a custom export job; product management wanted a catalog instead. Standard REST endpoints deliver synchronized metadata, ad markers, and engagement signals with versioning and sandbox keys for integrators. Onboarding a new client is provisioning and keys — not a quarter-long integration project.
Module 3: Kubernetes SRE
Live events autoscale on queue lag and connection counts; SLO dashboards page SRE when error budgets burn during premieres. Incident runbooks name who rolls back the deployment vs. who scales nodes — learned after a championship match rehearsal. Post-event reviews feed back into capacity plans for the next rights deal.

Live event scale
Live and replay traffic share Kafka schemas and normalization services — client apps consume standard APIs instead of bespoke export jobs.
Ingest & Stream Processing
Partitioned topics by event and venue absorb championship-level spikes; backpressure tests used prior-season peaks as benchmarks. Normalization strips vendor-specific quirks before fan-out.
API Product Layer
Versioned REST endpoints deliver metadata, ad markers, and engagement signals with sandbox keys for integrators. Onboarding is provisioning and credentials — not a custom ETL project per broadcaster.
SRE & Live Operations
SLO dashboards and autoscaling policies tie to queue lag and connection counts. Incident runbooks separate rollback from horizontal scale actions learned in dress rehearsals.

Project results
Broadcasters onboard through standard APIs while live events scale on streaming infrastructure — custom export projects are no longer the default integration.
Kafka pipelines absorbed championship-level spikes in dress rehearsals; schema registry protected consumers during rapid fixes.
Standard REST endpoints replaced one-off exports for anchor clients with sandbox keys and contract tests per release.
SLO dashboards and autoscaling tie to queue lag; incident runbooks separate rollback from horizontal scale.
Post-event reviews fed capacity plans for the next rights deal with measured lag and error budgets.
Deployment freezes during critical broadcast minutes with pre-named rollback owners.
